This Sunday is for my mom. In the afternoon I will be canvassing for Obama’s campaign, for reasons beyond the scope of this entry. In the morning, I am walking in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
This year I am dedicating my walk to my moms.
Charlotte, my “mom mom,” would have had her birthday the day before on the 4th. Although she did not technically have “breast cancer;” she had a carcinoid tumor in her breast that she battled like a trooper; there was no way that she would let it get the best of her. I dedicate my walk to the spirit in which she fought her battle.
Dolores, my adopted mom through marriage, is nothing less than inspirational in her ongoing battle with just about every known cancer. It has been many years since she was first diagnosed. For lack of a better description, Dolores practices her active spirituality with her feet. The faith she put in her God and her doctors is nothing less than inspirational. Not only has she made regular treks to the Mayo Clinic 1 1/2 hours away all of these years, she is the patient who actually follows what her doctors want her to do. We should ALL learn from Dolores.
I am also dedicating my walk to all of our daughters. To my friends battling this disease, know that you are also foremost in my mind. Hopefully, our walking and raising research funds will put this disease behind all of our children; I can think of no better goal in making breast cancer, along with all other types of cancer, prehistoric.
Wish us sunny skies; I know we will be walking with sunny hearts.
